A man has been jailed for stealing wine from a store - hours after his last court appearance.

Sammy Askew, of Greenwood Street in Primrose Hill, admitted taking two bottles worth £9.

He swiped the goods from Asda in Bradford Road on August 11.

Earlier that day magistrates had given the 38-year-old a conditional discharge for shop theft.

And a few days before that on August 6, he was also in court for a similar offence.

Today  he appeared at Kirklees Magistrates’ Court in custody after failing to turn up for his hearing a day previously.

Magistrates heard that he was shown on the store’s CCTV footage stealing the wine, which was not recovered.

His solicitor explained that Askew had a number of issues, including alcohol dependency and a problem with heroin.

Prior to the new offence his father died, which caused him distress and led to his alcohol intake increasing.

Magistrates sentenced him to a total of 12 weeks in prison.
