A JURY is expected to retire today to consider its verdict on a pair accused of murdering toddler Sanam Navsarka.

Sanam died aged two years and four months on May 8 from fatty embolism – a complication resulting from untreated fractures to her thighs.

Some 107 injuries were found on her body, including bruising, broken arms and legs.

Her mother Zahbeena Navsarka and her fiancé Subhan Anwar, both 21, of Riddings Road, Deighton, are on trial at Bradford Crown Court. They both deny murder.

Navsarka admits failing to protect her daughter.

Anwar, who met Navsarka while working at his uncle’s mobile phone shop in Batley, denies causing or allowing the death of a child.

Yesterday Judge Peter Thornton QC reminded jurors of all the evidence in the case during his summing up speech.

The judge also told the jury Anwar had no previous convictions and was to be treated as a person of good character.

Finishing his address yesterday, Judge Thornton released the jury for them to reconvene today for a few final points of advice.

The jury is expected to retire this morning to consider its verdict.

Both defendants sat in the dock of a busy courtroom flanked by security guards.

Bearded Anwar, wearing a dark suit and striped tie, remained impassive throughout the five-hour speech.

Navsarka, dressed in a dark suit and white shirt, gazed downwards during yesterday’s hearing.

The case continues.
