HUDDERSFIELD singer Sarah Hamlet is singing for joy after winning a major karaoke competition in the town.

Sarah beat off competition from more than 180 other singers who took part in various heats.

And in front of hundreds of people packed into Chicago Rock Café, in Huddersfield, she wowed the five judges with her powerful voice.

Organiser Les Rodgers said: "She has a very distinctive voice and gave a very professional performance.

"It was a great night. Every one of the 10 finalists did themselves proud."

Sarah won £500, a chance to cut her own CD, a contract and a weekend break.

Those who missed out on hearing the finalists sing will get another chance at the McAlpine Stadium on October 29 at a Children in Need concert.

It includes Huddersfield illusionist David Knight, and mind games by Les Rodgers. Tickets from Les on 07792406042.
