A SOLDIER has completed a gruelling, nine-day, 100-kilometre trek across some of Peru's most breathtaking mountains.

Signaller Sarah Kain, 20, of Lockwood, was in a team which travelled the Huayhuash circuit in the north and the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu.

She said: "I had never done trekking before. It was excellent. The trail was not as hard as I thought it would be. I would like to do more."

Sarah, who is in the 7th Armoured Brigade's headquarters signal squadron, based near Hanover in Germany, had a guide and two drivers.

Donkeys carried their equipment.

Expedition leader Lt Aileen Grant said: "It was great to give these guys the chance to be in that environment. It was a well-earned break from work."
