HUDDERSFIELD street wardens have been helping to brighten up the town centre.

The wardens, who patrol the town centre and report incidences of litter, vandalism and anti-social behaviour, were asked how they wanted to promote themselves, using cash grants from the Government's Neighbourhood Renewal Unit.

They chose to buy promotional materials and also to spruce up flowerbeds on Castlegate and in High Street, near the JobCentre Plus building.

Plants were put in by Kirklees Council's Leisure Services and are now blooming.

William Pearson, street warden manager, said he had several letters of appreciation from the public.

He added: "We asked for something nice and bright and colourful. Something which stood out in one place, rather then trying to spread it across the town. The flowers have been very well received."

Flowerbeds have also been revamped near the war memorial in Dewsbury, opposite Princess Alexandra Walk.
