A pub that was discovered to have a fully functioning cannabis factory upstairs is undergoing repair work after a fire.

The Waggon & Horses has been clothed from head to toe in plastic sheeting and scaffolding.

The pub in Bradford Road, Hillhouse, has not served alcohol since May when a fire broke out – thought to have been triggered by shorting the electricity supply, a common feature of cannabis production.

When police were called to help manage traffic on the busy road officers found there was a heavy smell of cannabis inside. Upstairs, which was rented out to tenants, they found 58 cannabis plants.

Landlord Denford Thomas, 60, of Crosland Moor was initially arrested and bailed on suspicion of permitting the production of a controlled drug but no charges were ever brought against him.

But following the negative publicity the licence to serve alcohol was revoked.

York-based marketing company Sidney Phillips had been trying to sell the six-bedroom property for £245,000 but a spokeswoman said yesterday that they were no longer involved.

No plans for the building have yet been submitted to Kirklees Council.
