Workmen demolishing a former club have uncovered a piece of history.

The workers were clearing away the remains of St George’s Club, Scholes, when they came across two time capsules in the foundations of the building.

The site is being cleared to make way for five houses.

Under two date stones, laid by ‘Col T Brooke JP’ and ‘Miss SJ Tinker’ on October 8, 1898, the workers found two bottles.

Christopher Humphries, who has been working for Marsden Contractors, said: “Under the stone with ‘Tinker’ on it the cork had rotted and whatever ever was inside must have rotted away.

“But under the Brooke stone there was a rolled-up newspaper with a handwritten letter inside it.

“It was brilliant to discover them. We’ve had a lot of people coming up and asking about them.

“I’m going to clean them up and keep them as ornaments.”

While Mr Humphries, of Kirkheaton, has kept the bottles, the remains of the newspaper and note were given to Alan Holmes, sub-postmaster at Scholes Post Office.

Mr Holmes has dried and laminated some of the legible scraps of the letter and the newspaper, thought to be the long defunct Holmfirth Express.

It is thought the letter contains the names of the founders of the club, including a ‘Miss Tinker’ and ‘Turner Sr’.

Mr Holmes said: “It was very fragile but I managed to extract some sensible bits.

“With the newspaper you can make out some of the stories. There are some almost complete columns.”
