Little Charlie Gee thinks his parents “don’t want him anymore” because of a schooling row.

Problems getting into his local school means seven-year-old Charlie has to live with his grandparents, four miles away from the rest of his family.

Charlie was told he couldn’t join his three brothers at Moorlands School near their home in Salendine Nook, and instead has to live with his grandparents during the week to attend Cowlersley Primary.

The family had moved from Cowlersley to Salendine Nook last year.

Devastated mum Clare, 30, said the drastic move was their “last resort” because she was unable to do the two school runs at once.

The dilemma has been further exasperated by Charlie’s problems in the classroom, as teachers suspect he could be eligible for a diagnosis of ADHD.

Clare said the family took him out of school for home schooling at Christmas, but decided to send him back to Cowlersley after they found his possible condition wouldn’t be helped if he was out of school.

Clare said: “It’s just one big circle of problems.

“For us not to be able to look after our own child, it’s just absolutely heartbreaking. I’m his mother and I should be taking him to school.

“He thinks we don’t want him because we send him away, and he sees Nana and Grandad as his parents instead of us.”

Charlie currently stays with dad Jon Gee’s parents Denise, 67, and Stuart, 68, in Milnsbridge during the week. But the grandparents have more concerns over how long he can stay, as their son Kristian has Down’s Syndrome and also requires their care.

“Charlie can’t stay there forever”, Clare added.

“When he comes back I will have to take him myself, which involves two bus trips each way. That means eight bus trips a day for me and I will be unable to take my baby to pre-school.”

Clare is a full-time mum to 23-month-old Enzo, as well as Dorian, ten, Jack, eight and five-year-old Jensen who attend Moorlands.

Charlie is ineligible for a bus pass to get to school as it is too far away, while dad Jon, 29, is a bus driver working early morning shifts and is unable to help with the school run.

Clare added: “Moorlands is over-subscribed and say they don’t have room for Charlie. They currently have one pupil more than their capacity, so why not make room for just one more?”

A spokesperson for Kirklees admissions said: “We are committed to supporting local families by helping children secure a place at their preferred school.

“Sometimes there are more applicants than places available. When a school is over-subscribed in this way, several criteria are used to allocate places.

“An independent appeals panel has considered this case and has supported the decision made by the local authority.

“The family have since applied for a different school and have secured a place which is currently available for Charlie.

“If the family wish to look for school places which are closer to their home address, we are very happy to help them.”
