A TORY councillor has hit out over plans to close a school.
Clr Margaret Bates, who represents Liversedge and Gomersal, said RM Grylls Middle School at Liversedge was thriving and should be left alone.
"Apart from providing an education, the school provides many after- school activities for the benefit of children and parents, many of whom are hard-working single parents," she said. "The last thing this council should be doing is closing schools especially in a deprived area such as the Windybank estate."
The school, which has 166 pupils, celebrated its 50th anniversary last year.
Clr Bates said she and her colleagues had been told of the closure possibility, but were asked to keep quiet while Kirklees Council's Cabinet gave the matter its initial consideration before consultation with residents.
The Liberal Democrat Cabinet then changed the discussion without informing the ward councillors and began writing to parents.
Clr Bates said: "This is the second time they have tried to close this school, and it is the second time ward councillors have found out about it from means other than council officers or Cabinet members."
