HUDDERSFIELD New College wants to expand its sports hall and build four classrooms.

The sixth-form college in New Hey Road, Salendine Nook, needs more space for pupils who want to study sports and leisure courses.

Only five years ago the college completed work on a new sports hall. This is now set to be extended.

Mobile classrooms that were being used for sports studies lessons will be replaced by the new block.

Principal Philip Forrest said the extra space was much needed.

"Student numbers have grown much quicker than we had expected, which is why we are having to consider expanding the sports hall.

"Sports and leisure is an area that more and more young people are interested in studying.

"We already have wonderful provisions here for them to do that, but if these plans are approved our facilities will be even better.

"If everything goes to plan we are hoping to have it all completed for the next academic year."

A decision on whether the college's expansion plans will get the green light is expected on February 4.

The New College has doubled in size in the last 11 years.

More than 1,500 students now study there.
