A SCHOOL is to host its first music festival next month.

Holmfirth High School has organised the “Young Musician of the Year” competition on Friday March 14.

Students will take part in a variety of classes including piano and keyboard, strings, woodwind, brass, percussion, voice and guitar.

There will be prizes and trophies for lower and upper school class winners, lower and upper school overall winners and an overall winner.

The school’s Director of Music, James Morgan, said the school had an enviable reputation for its musical talent with many pupils studying music at various prestigious musical institutions last year.

“More than 30 past pupils have gone on to study music post A level, many entering the professional music field in a wide variety of areas from orchestral musicians and singers to rock musicians and technologists, a record of which we are most proud.

“Former pupils Sarah Ogden and Rachel Spencer and other individuals and organisations connected with the school won 13 first prizes in last year’s Mrs Sunderland Music Festival and four past pupils went on to study music at various prestigious musical institutions last year,” he said.

Anyone wanting to sponsor a trophy at the event can contact Mr Morgan at the school on 01484 691460.
