For schoolgirl Shannon Wignall, her hair was her pride and joy.

Every time she visited the hairdresser, the Huddersfield youngster had only a couple of centimetres trimmed from her flowing locks.

But now she’s sacrificed most of her hair to help children suffering from cancer.

The nine-year-old from Quarmby had more than a foot of her hair cut off for the Little Princess Trust, which provides real-hair wigs for children who lose their own hair during cancer treatment.

Family friend and hairdresser Laura Whitworth carried out the hair-raising operation at Shannon’s home in Quarmby Road.

The youngster’s mum, Natalie Payne, who works at the Nags Head in Ainley Top, said: “Shannon wanted to do something to help poorly children.

“Her young brother Joseph, who is six, has a tissue disease and he has been in and ut of hospitals in Calderdale and Leeds.

“We also had a big charity fundraiser at work and Shannon wanted to do her bit, so we went on the internet and fund out about the Little Princess Trust.

“She has always been proud of her hair and hardly ever has it trimmed, so I think it was a brave thing to do”.

And the Reinwood Junior School pupil can’t wait to get back to school and show off her new hairstyle to her classmates.

Shannon Wignall, 9, of Quarmby has her hair plait cut off to donate to the Little Princess charity, by hairdresser, Laura Whitworth.
