MORE schools in Kirklees have said they will close tomorrow as a result of the one-day national strike by teaching union the NUT.

The action in the region will be more widespread than was first suggested with at least 55 primary and secondary schools now closing to all pupils and many more partially closed.

Parents are advised to check with their child’s school for confirmation of its strike plans.

Meanwhile, Huddersfield Technical College principal and chief executive Chris Sadler has responded to news that lecturers will also strike tomorrow in support of a pay claim by the University and College Union.

Lecturers will be picketing and taking part in rallies throughout Yorkshire, including Huddersfield.

Mr Sadler said: “The College has been officially informed of a national UCU decision to take one day of strike action.

“The College will do all it can to minimise disruption to learners and recommends that they attend classes and examinations as normal, unless they have been contacted by the College already and advised not to attend.

“This one-day action is very disappointing because Huddersfield Technical College has met all its obligations in relation to national agreements with the Union in recent years – including full and prompt payment of all agreed increases and the expensive implementation of a job evaluation process from which all lecturers have benefited.

“We apologise to learners for any disruption and will do all we can to support learners on the day of the strike.”
