YOUNGSTERS at Holmfirth Junior and Infant School are hoping for a new home for their after-school activities.

The school has applied to Kirklees Council for permission to put up a single-storey building on part of the adventure playground.

It would replace an old portable building which now houses the breakfast and after- school club.

Staff hope a new, larger building will improve the school's existing after-school provision by allowing more children to attend.

The after-school club's senior co-ordinator, Hazel Carr, said: "Our club was the first to open in the Kirklees area, 24 years ago.

"It is very successful, the children love coming and we're full every night and morning.

"We've got waiting lists of children wanting to come along.

"That's why we need a bigger, new facility because the existing one is quite cramped.

"The old building is dilapidated and we desperately need to replace it.

"It was 15 years ago when we started trying to get a new building for the club.

"It's taken this long to be able to apply for planning permission and get the money."

Throughout the day, the new building would be used for music lessons and children with special needs.

It would also benefit the school's holiday club, which caters for children from outside the school.

The application has been submitted to Kirklees planning officials.

If the scheme is approved the school hopes to have the new building up and running for when the September term starts.
