A SCHOOL is having to think again after being refused permission a fourth time for 30 houses on its land.

Campaigners today welcomed the decision to reject the scheme for Castle Hall School, Mirfield.

Almost 750 letters objecting to the plan were sent to Kirklees Council.

The school wants to sell the land to pay for a new sports hall and all-weather pitch.

Planning officials had recommended that approval be given.

But a majority of councillors voted against the scheme at a planning committee meeting yesterday.

People living near the school opposed the plan, fearing it would bring road safety problems.

A row has raged over the proposals for more than two years.

The school said housing development was the only way to pay for a much- needed sports hall after a bid for lottery cash was rejected.

The school also said the development would be coupled with £250,000 road safety measures.

The package would ease traffic congestion and improve the safety of children arriving and leaving the school, said backers of the plan.
