Hundreds of school pupils have got an extra day off as winter bites back.

At least 9 schools in Kirklees and 38 in Calderdale have been shut by the heavy snow which has blanketed much of the region.

Schools have shut because of difficulties in staff getting to work to provide cover for children.

In Kirklees, schools closed are: Batley Girls’ High School,Birstall Primary Academy,Clough Head J and I School, East Bierley CE (VC) Primary School,Emley First School,Fieldhead Primary Academy, Fixby J and I School, Helme CE (VA) J and I School, Hillside Primary School, Holme J and I School, Manor Croft Academy, Shaw Cross I and N School, Wellhouse J and I School and Wilberlee J and I School.

Holmfirth High School said pupils were allowed to return home at lunchtime if possible.

Kirklees College is open but delayed the start of lectures until 10am as did Castle Hall in Mirfield.

In Calderdale some 38 schools and colleges are shut because of the weather.

They include Bowling Green Primary, Brooksbank School Sports College, Castlefields Infants, Elland CE JIN School, Lightcliffe Academy and Rastrick High School.
