A SCOUT escaped serious injury after falling 12ft from a zip wire on an activity night.

Other Scouts looked on in horror as the 12-year-old boy fell from the aerial runway.

The boy, from the 11th Huddersfield North group based at Outlane Methodist Church, has not been named.

He was taking part in various adventure activities at the Bradley Wood Campsite and Activity Centre in Shepherds Thorn Lane, near Brighouse, on Thursday.

Around 70 scouts from three groups were at the site.

Immediately after the boy fell leaders were by his side. He complained of pain in his back and neck and he was told to stay still until paramedics arrived.

The boy was taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary where he was treated and discharged.

He was yesterday (Friday) said to be recovering at home. It is understood he has no broken bones.

The ambulance service was called at about 10pm.

Mr Graham Earnshaw, district commissioner for Huddersfield North, said Scout leaders reacted in exactly the right way in keeping the boy still and calling an ambulance.

He said he would be conducting an investigation into the circumstances and would speak to all those involved.

Mr Earnshaw said the site had an "excellent" safety record and this was only the third accident reported this year. The other two were for slips on ice.

Bradley Wood, West Yorkshire’s main Scout camp site, is set in 45 acres of open and enclosed woodland and includes accommodation blocks.

It offers a wide range of outdoor and indoor activities including a purpose-built indoor climbing wall and a high ropes course.

Other activities include a cresta run, shooting, archery and orienteering.
