Huddersfield Civic Society is launching its annual Design Awards .

And once again the Society is teaming up with the Examiner by inviting readers to submit nominations for the development which they feel has contributed most towards helping improve the quality and image of the town.

Now in their third year, these awards have been presented to the very best developments within Huddersfield that have been completed over the past couple of years.

Last year the society received nominations for a number of outstanding buildings and category winners and trophies were presented at an awards ceremony in Huddersfield Town Hall in March.

Category winners in 2013 were Kirkwood Hospice In-patient Unit, the Old Water Tower at Huddersfield Station, 3M Buckley Innovation Centre at Huddersfield University, 11-17 Chancery Lane and J. Dodd & Co., Market Walk. The overall winner, the new in-patient unit at Kirkwood Hospice was an outstanding piece of architecture and it is hoped nominations will reveal similar high standards of design.

Nominated buildings should fall within the former Huddersfield borough boundary. That is between Outlane and Fixby in the north, Berry Brow and Almondbury in the south, Milnsbridge in the west and Cooper Bridge and Waterloo in the east. Projects must have been completed between July 1, 2012 and December 31 this year.

Readers have until New Year’s Eve to submit their choices.

From nominations submitted, judges will choose the winners including the project felt worthy of receiving the Examiner Readers’ award. These winners will receive plaques and an HCS trophy will be awarded to the outright winner at an event next March.

David Wyles, Vice Chairman of the Civic Society, said: “We hope Examiner readers will participate in these awards by submitting their nominations. Last year’s winners demonstrate the quality of many new developments and the awards can only help raise the profile and image of the town.”

Examples of recently completed projects include restoration work on St. Peter’s Parish Church, the renovated barn at Yorkshire Wildlife Trust’s Stirley Farm, the recently restored tram shelter off Edgerton Road and various housing projects such as the newly completed housing association accommodation on Bath Street.

Nominations should be sent to R Huddleston, 3 Booth Bank, Slaithwaite, Huddersfield HD7 5XA or email: richardehuddleston@gmail.com
