POLICE are following up potential new leads in the hunt for a sex attacker who struck in a church doorway.

The man seriously sexually assaulted a 22-year-old woman in a doorway of Huddersfield Parish Church early on Sunday morning.

Police appealed for witnesses to come forward in yesterday's Examiner and some have phoned Huddersfield CID with information.

Pc Dave McSweeney, of Huddersfield police, said: "We have had some calls from witnesses and will be following those up today.

"But there is someone who can tell us who the attacker is. That is his friend, who was with him on the night."

The attacker and his friend met the two women on Lord Street in the town centre at 3am.

The women had left Johnny's nightclub in Beast Market a short time before and had got chatting to the men in a bus shelter.

The victim's friend stayed talking with one of the men and the victim and the attacker wandered into nearby St Peter's Gardens.

They ended up in the church doorway, which faces on to Kirkgate and the man then carried out the attack.

The attacker is a very dark-skinned African-Caribbean, aged about 24, 6ft tall, slim and bald. He wore a black, knee-length jacket which buttons up to the neck and has a collar.
