They were there for some of the town’s great sporting moments.

They were there when Denis Law played for Huddersfield Town and they were there when Town played the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea.

But now a piece of sporting history is up for grabs – and sports chiefs hope Town fans will want to recapture the memories.

Hundreds of seats from the old Leeds Road ground are being sold off by officials at Huddersfield YMCA rugby club.

The club took blocks of seats when the Leeds Road ground was demolished in 1994.

Now the club is to replace the Town seats and is selling them off at £60 for a block of three.

They will be replaced with seats from the Old Trafford cricket ground.

The YMCA started to redevelop the rugby club premises at Laund Hill 20 years ago. They provided a new club-house and 400-seater stand to ensure supporters could watch undercover.

Club spokesman Tom Sanderson said: “We had no seats, but at the same time Town were moving to the new stadium and the old Leeds Road was being demolished.

“An intrepid bunch of volunteers avoided the wrecking balls to salvage 500 seats from the main stand which are now housed in the Laund Hill stand.

“The seats have served the club well but like anything it is time to move on. I have managed to source 600 seats with another piece of history from the Lancashire’s Old Trafford cricket ground.

“They had been in use at the Don Valley Stadium but that, too, is closing. Now they’ll get another lease of life.”

Tom added: “I thought it was a shame that some of Town’s history should be scrapped so I contacted Stephen King of the HTFC supporters association to see if he could get in touch with Town supporters and the club itself.

“Stephen said yes to the idea and came to watch the YMCA against Rochdale and re-lived his youth by sitting in one of the seats. He was impressed with the good condition and that the original Town blue is still visible.”

Mr King said: “It’s a great idea. I was one of the original Young Terriers at Leeds Road and have fond memories of the ground.

“I am sure many Town fans will be interested and in fact the first email we had about them was from a supporter in New York.

“The seats will cost him £60 but I’ll hand-deliver them if he pays the air fare.

“I hope people support the YMCA who are doing so much for amateur sport.”

The seats are being sold on a first come first serve basis for £60 collection from Laund Hill.
