An historic Mirfield building is being reduced to rubble.

Westfields, which dates back to 1868, is believed to be a former mill owner’s home.

Plans for seven homes on the site next to Knowl Park, Mirfield, were approved in 2014.

It had been thought the building would be retained, as Kirklees Council successfully applied to convert it into flats.

But Leeds based Riva Homes was given the green light to demolish the old house in April this year.

The building is not listed by English Heritage and so the council had no objection to demolishing it.

Riva Homes said valuable stone and archictectural features would be salvaged for sale.

Clr Martyn Bolt said Mirfield Town Council had investigated getting the old premises listed but had failed.

Demolition work finally started this week.
