A prolific burglar responsible for more than £60,000 worth of crime in the Huddersfield area has been sentence to 20 months in a young offender institution.

Leeds Crown Court heard Darcy White admitted offences under West Yorkshire Police’s Operation Clean Slate, after he was arrested for a break-in at a house in Gilroyd Lane, Linthwaite, Huddersfield in February.

He was sentenced to eight months behind bars on March 6 this year for burglary but the judge at that time was not aware of the Linthwaite offence or the 64 other offences which White asked to be taken into consideration, including more than 30 of burglary.

Heather Weir prosecuting told the court that White was only charged in April for the Gilroyd Lane offence which happened when the occupier was away on holiday.

The house had been left locked and secure before White tried to remove a panel from the UPVC doors at the rear of the property. He failed but was able to break an adjoining window and get inside.

A “tidy search” was made with items stolen including a television set, laptop, and jewellery. A set of keys was also taken from the kitchen enabling the opening of shed and the theft of a mountain bike from there, it also had the key for a Citroen car parked outside.

The stolen property was loaded into the car and White was a passenger when it was driven away by someone else. He told police later he spent his share of the proceeds on cannabis.

The car was allegedly sold and later involved in a collision and none of the stolen property was recovered. A footprint was found in the bedroom at the property matching White’s shoes.

The 64 offences taken into consideration involved a total of £63,209 and included 35 of burglary at properties in the Huddersfield area including Deighton and Linthwaite.

Adam Birkby representing White said his last case had progressed so quickly to sentence in March he had not had time to have offences under the clean slate operation prepared.

That had now led to offences being cleared up which would otherwise not have been detected for which he should be given credit.

White, 20, who before his earlier sentence which he is still serving, was of New Hey Road, Huddersfield, admitted burgling the house and shed at Gilroyd Lane.

Recorder Henry Prosser said his new sentence would begin immediately and reflect “the many offences” taken into consideration.
