A spark from a brazier on allotments in Mirfield is believed to have started a blaze which destroyed three sheds killing seven chickens.

Firefighters believe that an allotment-holder burning rubbish at Nab Lane allotments today may have inadvertently caused a fire which ripped through three sheds, a fence and undergrowth.

Watch commander Chris Johnson, of Dewsbury Fire Station, said there was no obvious cause and no one seen acting suspiciously.

“We believe it was a spark from a brazier,” he said. “High winds were driving the flames. It was potentially serious because the allotments back onto some houses.”

Two fire engines from Dewsbury attended.
