A young girl has had her hair cut to make wigs for children with cancer – and invited the rest of her school to raise money for the same cause.

Aaliyah Johnson, seven, of Dalton, donated 12 inches of hair to the Little Princess Trust having heard about it on the internet.

Mum Kelly Porteous, 38, couldn’t believe it when Aaliyah told her what she wanted to do.

“She said there were lots of other little girls that had cancer and she wanted to help them,” said Kelly.

“I think she’d seen it on YouTube and we sat down and talked about it. Because she’s so young I thought she’d change her mind but she didn’t. I’m so proud of her.”

Kelly approached Aaliyah’s school, Moldgreen Junior and Infants, and asked if they would like to join in the fundraising.

Staff put it to the school council and the children decided to give the proceeds of a non-uniform day to the charity.

Kelly hopes around £500 will be raised in total.

Aaliyah had her hair cut by Adelle Bentley at the Gerrard Bentley salon in Kirkburton and loves her new look.

“She can’t stop posing,” said Kelly. “She says that when it grows back she will do the same again.”
