It certainly hasn’t been an easy few weeks for David Cameron.

But a perky letter from a sprightly local seven-year-old was enough to cheer him up.

Upset by the Brexit vote, Charlotte McLellan wrote to the former PM on the day of his resignation saying she thought he was “the best Prime Minister I have had” despite having only been born a year before he took office.

But the Highburton pupil was gobsmacked when the former leader wrote back.

Now a backbencher with slightly more time on his hands, the Witney MP told Charlotte he was “profoundly grateful” for her support.

The youngster had written to him to say she was “very upset” he was standing down.

She signed the note off to say “you might not know me, but I know you”, after watching him resign following last month’s referendum.

Mum Nicola, 35, said the youngster’s letter “melted my heart.”

She added: “Charlotte was off sick the day the referendum result was announced. She watched the news and was upset to see him stand down so took it upon herself to write him a letter.

“I told her ‘he’s a very busy man, he might not reply’, so we were shocked when we got the reply through the door.”

Nursery nurse Nicola, who also has a nine-year-old daughter Ruby and lives with husband Andrew, 36, said: “Charlotte has a lot of energy and seems to have taken up more of an interest in politics with all the referendum stuff.

“She was quite upset about the decision to leave the EU so felt she wanted let David Cameron know.

Charlotte said: “I think it’s really good that he replied. I like David Cameron very much.

“I was overjoyed that he wrote back.”

The reply said: “I appreciate your generous letter of encouragement and support; it really does mean a huge amount.

“Of course, I am disappointed by the result. The verdict was decisive and we now have a duty to not only respect the choice that the British people have made, but to help make it work.”
