A former tenant damaged a door to his property in a bid to retrieve some of his belongings.

Shane Gledhill admitted criminal damage when he appeared before Kirklees Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

The court heard that he had been renting the property at Leslie Street in Birkby.

After leaving to stay with his girlfriend, the 25-year-old had wanted to pick up some of his property.

Prosecutor Robert Campbell said that Gledhill asked landlord Tariq Mahmud via a third party if he could do so.

But Mr Mahmud declined to deal with his friend and Gledhill went round himself.

Mr Campbell said: “A neighbour saw the defendant attacking the door.

“He said he wanted to get his belongings out and caused damage to the door on the way in.

“The Crown say he had no authority to do this as there were other ways for him to get his property back.”

District Judge Andrew Pascoe adjourned Gledhill’s sentencing until October 7.

This is because he is due in court for another matter on that date.

Unconditional bail was granted.
