A man was caught drink-driving when he took his wife on a trip to see a Huddersfield landmark.

Shane Sheard, 45, was stopped by police late on October 16 and as they spoke with him they could smell alcohol on his breath.

Sheard explained that his wife had wanted to see Castle Hill after being forced to stay indoors for some time.

Kirklees magistrates heard that police stopped Sheard at New Laithe Hill in Newsome at 8.40pm.

After noticing that he smelt of intoxicants, the officers arrested him. Sheard, of Bradshaw Close, Honley, provided samples of breath.

These showed that he had 51 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath.

The legal limit is 35 microgrammes.

Paul Blanchard, mitigating, said that his client had spent the evening with his partner and drunk three or four cans of Fosters.

He explained: “She’d not been well and had been housebound for some time.

“She wanted to go to Castle Hill, it was the first time she’d been out of the house for a long time and aiming to please he took her.”

Mr Blanchard added that a drink-driving conviction would have a “catastrophic” impact on his client who is a plumber.

Magistrates banned Sheard from driving for 14 months.

He must also pay £400 fine, £80 costs and £15 victim surcharge.
