Dogs have killed sheep in two incidents in Huddersfield.

And sheep owner Stephanie Webster - left with the grisly task of cleaning up the badly-injured sheep - had a simple message: “Keep your dogs under control”.

Stephanie has about 300 sheep in fields at both Thurstonland and Blackmoorfoot and in the space of 48 hours found two of them mauled by dogs.

Now she is having to rear newborn lambs left by the dead sheep.

She said: “The sheep are out in the fields at this time of year and should be safe.

“There is a footpath running through the field at Thurstonland so people with dogs should know to keep them on a lead.

“The first ewe that we found was completely ragged by a dog, and had puncture wounds all around her neck and chest.

“Her leg was broken in more than one place, leaving her unable to walk unable to rear her two lambs but still alive, just. Obviously the only option for her was to humanely put her to sleep.

“Just a day later I went to check on sheep in a different field miles away to be greeted by a badly injured ewe. She was covered in blood but still alive, but as we droven into the field she literally just dropped dead. Her physical injuries were not as severe as the first ewe and she could get over the wounds, but basically she has been run to death.

“The shock, the fear, the instinct to protect her young must have been awful. Imagine somebody running after you trying to kill you, their stamina is better than yours they can outrun you, you literally die from the fear. That’s basically what’s happened to this ewe.

“That’s another three lambs to add to our ever growing group of bottle feed lambs.

“It’s not just the fact that it’s so costly but time and effort not only from now but we’ve lost blood sweat and tears just to lamb healthy lambs and ewes to survive the lambing process. Now we need to keep checking them everyday just for us to go and find these.

“Sheep worrying is an offence and one that can end in your dogs being shot and the owner prosecuted, with farmers losing their livelihood.

“The next time you walk your dogs through a field with sheep in put them on a lead and keep them under control.”
