A fun evening of sheep racing raised £400 for a cancer charity.

The event in aid of The Laura Crane Youth Cancer Trust was held at Broad Oak Bowling Club in Linthwaite, writes Stoyan Dimitrov.

The race was organised by the cancer trust’s support group, The LCYCT Combats, and was sponsored by IT support company Digital Sheep.

Former rugby league player Keith Senior, who is the charity’s corporate ambassador, was in attendance.

There were a total of eight races during which six wooden sheep attached to long pieces of string on spools were rolled up as quickly as possible by the six competing ‘sheep racers’ as they pulled the sheep along the race track.

The winners of each race received sheep-related prizes.

Helen Mervill, fundraising manager at the cancer trust, said: “This was the first sheep-racing event held in aid of the charity so we were unsure about what to expect.

“But the evening was a huge success and was so much fun.

“The LCYCT Combats are a very proactive support group and work very hard to raise funds for the charity.”

The Laura Crane Youth Cancer Trust gives support to teenagers and young adults with cancer and funds research into the cancers that affect those age groups.

The charity, which receives no funding from the government, is currently raising money for a research project into germ cell tumours of the ovaries and the testes. To find out how to donate or become a volunteer, go to www.lauracranetrust.org/want-to-help

The LCYCT Combats support the charity at its events and also organise their own fundraisers.
