PROTESTERS have presented a petition to MP Barry Sheerman demanding the withdrawal of troops from Iraq.
More than 20 members of the Socialist Party and the Socialist Students Society met Mr Sheerman at his monthly surgery at Huddersfield Town Hall.
They handed over a petition signed by more than 600 people asking for troops to be removed from the country.
Jackie Grunsell, a Socialist Party organiser, said even though Mr Sheerman originally supported the war she was hopefully he may reconsider.
"All the Government's reasons for going to war with Iraq have now been proved to have been false," she said.
"We want Mr Sheerman to acknowledge this and change his mind about Britain's role in the conflict.
"We want the occupation of Iraq to end and the troops to return home."
But Mr Sheerman refused to change his mind on Iraq.
"I still support the Government on the Iraq situation," he said.
"I had grave doubts about the whole thing from the very start and made this very public at the time.
"But in the end I supported the Government and decided it was the right thing to do. The Prime Minister is an honest man and he thought we were most definitely doing the right thing.
"Now it is vital we get democracy in place and the elections working. Then we can have a rapid withdrawal from the country."
