Fire crews from across West Yorkshire are tackling a huge blaze in Calderdale.

It is believed to have started this morning in a building containing up to 25 lorries.

The fire is at industrial premises at Bowlshaw Lane, Northowram.

Fire officers got the call at 11.41am and when the first crews arrived, they found flames and a huge pall of black smoke pouring from the building.

There are currently 10 fire engines at the scene, with more than 40 firefighters involved in the operation.

Crews at the scene include Halifax, Dewsbury, Rastrick and Cleckheaton.

A spokesman for the West Yorkshire Fire Service said: “We got the call at 11.41am and the blaze is in a large industrial building.

“There are reports that up to 25 heavy goods vehicles are parked up in the building.

“We have sent in 10 fire appliances from stations all across the region.

“At the moment, we have two ground monitors and three hand-held jets in use at the scene.”

People living close to the complex said there was a plume of black smoke rising into the air and had seen fire engines responding to the 999 call.

Police have closed some roads in the area and tweeted: “Due to a large fire near to Stone Chair roundabout near Shelf please only use this route if necessary, long delays expected.”
