AN AWARD-WINNING community group have raised many thousands for Kirkwood Hospice over the years.

And the members of Shelley Community Association have once again handed over a bumper cheque to the Albany Road hospice.

This time they have raised £1,400 with a community event serving delicious dishes of strawberries and cream and traditional cream teas.

The fantastic community spirit of the group has been recognised with a Big Society award.

The awards are issued weekly by Prime Minister David Cameron and Shelley residents were among the first to be recognised earlier this year.

Four members of the association – Ann Priestman, Len Hoare, Lorna MacDonald and Janet Metcalfe – went to a reception at Downing Street to meet Mr Cameron and visit the Houses of Parliament.

And they also took along scores of other villagers to help them to accept the award – on behalf of the entire village.

Mrs Metcalfe said: “I do think the Big Society is a good idea.

“We should all help each other and be fair to each other.

“David Cameron was ever so nice and he listened to us and was very interested in what we had to say.”
