A family of nine were banned from Denby Dale tip after being told their family-sized vehicle was unwelcome.

Furious Shepley parents Stephanie and Chris Rhodes were turned away from the site due to their minibus.

The vehicle is their only method of transport which they need to take their seven children to school.

The move - which the couple slammed as “discriminatory” - followed controversial new rules applied by Kirklees.

After hearing of the new restrictions taking force this month, IT consultant Chris, 43, was quick to register the family vehicle on the council website.

They were initially told their visits were limited to 12 times a year due to the size of the minibus.

But upon turning up at the Barnsley Road site on July 9, two days before the rules came into effect, staff told them the bus was not allowed.

“We just feel stuck in a limbo,” full-time mum Stephanie, 42, said.

“The council told us one thing, but the tip are telling us another.”

The couple contacted Kirklees, who have told them to send in photos of the vehicle.

Shepley family banned from going to the tip in their minibus, left to right, Lewis 1, Steph, Chris and Robert 4.

“The fact we are not allowed because of the size of our family just feels like discrimination.

“We are only asking that we have the same access as everyone else.

“We have lots of garden waste to get rid of, but we’re going on holiday soon and don’t want it to still be there when we get back.”

Stephanie, who has one-year-old Lewis, Robert, four, Annie, seven, and Mary, eight, says she “does not have time to be calling the council every day”.

The couple also have daughter Laura, 13, Victoria, 14, and 17-year-old son Alex.

A spokesperson for Kirklees said: “The council are aware of the family’s situation.

“We are currently awaiting further information, a photo of the vehicle, so we can check that the vehicle is correctly classified on our system and has the right level of access.

“Once the information requested has been received we will continue to support the family to try and find a resolution that enables them to dispose of their waste.”
