They are familiar figures to runners across Huddersfield.

Now a Shepley couple have turned to the Huddersfield public in a bid to run a marathon on the other side of the world.

And they hope to get enough backing to win the dream trip to Australia - for their seven-year-belated honeymoon.

Parents-of-three Matthew and Sarah-Jane Pattison say they are “running mad” and volunteer every week at the hugely-popular Huddersfield Parkrun with their sports-mad sons.

But with their hands full-on with sons Dexter, seven, Clarke, five and two-year-old Flynn, the couple haven’t had a holiday to themselves for 11 years.

And despite marrying in 2009, they have never managed to book a honeymoon.

The Kangaroo Island Marathon, which is hosted on the idyllic tourist island near Adelaide, is offering to pay for one couple’s flights, accommodation and marathon entry, provided they win the most votes on social media.

And Matthew, 36, and Sarah-Jane, 35, are currently inching their way closer to their Oz sporting dream as they stand at the top of the leaderboard of votes on the Marathon’s Facebook page.

Stay-at-home dad Matthew, who is director at the Huddersfield Junior Parkrun, said: “It’s a luxury we can’t afford, but with enough votes we could secure a place on the run.

“It would be a complete dream for us in our current situation.

The chance to compete in the Marathon would also mean secondary school teacher Sarah-Jane could visit her only living relative, sister Billie, in Sydney.

Matthew, who runs every day, added: “This is essentially a grant for people who want to run the Marathon but can’t afford to get there.
