MODEL citizen Courtney George has won the first award given in memory of a former school governor.

Courtney, 13, won the Kirkburton Middle School Malcolm Lee Award for Good Citizenship.

It was handed to her in an assembly by Chief Supt Barry South, West Yorkshire Police’s Kirklees divisional commander.

Head teacher Andrew Parker said: “Courtney has all the excellent qualities this award is designed to recognise.

“She has been a befriender to younger pupils, a member of the school council and part of the road safety committee.

“She does everything with a sunny disposition and ended the school year with a stack of certificates for a range of achievements.”

The award, which will be given out annually, recognises pupils who have contributed to the life of the school and wider community.

It was set up in memory of Mr Lee, who died last year.

Chief Supt South said: “The award falls in line with the work we do on anti-bullying and promoting positive behaviour.

“People tend to focus on the bad things kids do, but 99% do some very good things and we should recognise that.

“We should support the ones who go the extra mile.

“Courtney is a role model for her peers as well as younger children. It was quite clear from the reaction of the other children in the assembly that she was a worthy winner.”
