A child got a shock when a fire started as they were taking a shower.

The box unit of a shower in a house on New Hey Road in Marsh set alight as the youth was having a shower.

No-one was hurt in the incident that happened at 10.20pm last night.

The fire was quickly put out, but caused a lot of smoke damage to the house.

Watch Commander Stephen Bates, of Green Watch at Huddersfield Fire Station, said: “The shower unit caught fire when someone was in the shower, we don’t know if it was faulty or how it started.

“It caused quite a lot of damage to the property, mainly from the smoke.

“The property didn’t have smoke detectors so it was fortunate somebody was there when it started and able to act quickly.

“It was a child staying at their grandmas and they did the right thing by getting out and calling us.”

Green Watch firefighters isolated the power supply to the shower unit and then used a massive fan to help clear smoke from the property.

Mr Bates added: “Our advice to everyone is to have smoke detectors fitted – if you haven’t got them call your local fire stations and we’ll come and fit them.”
