IT was not the advice Brenda Perry expected when she called the NTL helpline.
The Kirkheaton woman (pictured), who was seeking help over her computer links, was greeted by a tirade of abuse and told to **** off!
There have been reports of similar abuse from callers all over the country.
And now the shocked company has apologised and launched an investigation.
Mrs Perry, 56, of The Paddock, called NTL's customer helpline yesterday because she was having problems with a broadband internet connection that they had installed on Friday.
After dialling the helpline number, Mrs Perry pressed 2, to be directed to the faults department.
She was greeted by a recorded message full of swearing and abuse.
A man, speaking with a North- East accent, said: "Hello, you are through to NTL customer services.
"We don't give a **** about you, we are never here, we will **** you about, basically, and we are not going to handle any of your complaints, so just **** off and leave us alone. Get a life."
Mrs Perry was shocked.
She said: "It's absolutely disgusting. My grand-daughter is 12 and I was going to leave her with the phone while I went out of the room for a moment.
"I laughed when I heard it, but it's not really funny. It's obviously someone who's got a vendetta against NTL."
The message had been taken off the helpline by 1pm yesterday.
Callers got the standard "Welcome to NTL" line.
The company has had complaints from several parts of the country about the message.
It is thought it was given out from the company call centres in Manchester, Swansea and Scotland.
A company spokesman said: "We'd like to apologise.
"We are now investigating how this message got on to our system".
One theory is that a computer hacker managed to get on to the company system," the spokesman added.
