A HUDDERSFIELD shoe shop is celebrating after being crowned the best dressed in town.

Shaw and Hallas Ltd of Market Walk has won first prize in a competition to find the best Christmas shop window in Huddersfield.

The shop - which this year devoted four windows to the Christmas theme - was one of 22 that took part across the town.

It was the first year the contest had been held in Huddersfield.

The Examiner teamed up with the Virtual Huddersfield website, Home 107.9 and the Town Centre Association to run the competition.

Town centre manager Cathy Burger, who helped organise the event, said: "We wanted to get the retailers to look at their window displays to try to make as big an impact as possible this Christmas.

"We thought it would make wandering through Huddersfield town centre even more enjoyable."

But it was the display at Shaw and Hallas that really impressed the panel of judges, which included Mayor of Kirklees Clr Margaret Fearnley.

Cathy added: "It was just outstanding with a different Christmas theme for each window.

"You could see that all the staff had gone to a lot of effort and they had even got their families involved.

"It was lovely."

The shop was awarded £100 to donate to a charity of its choice.

The cash will be sent to the Hamby Foundation to help the needy in Romania.

Term Time Wear, St John's Road, won second place in the competition.

Cinderella at Le Bonnet and Carl Wilde came joint third.

The public were also invited to vote for their favourite window.

The winner was the Kirkwood Hospice shop in Byram Street.
