POLICE officers are appealing for information following a shooting in Huddersfield town centre at the weekend.

A 23-year-old Fartown man who was questioned yesterday has been released on police bail following the incident in the early hours of Saturday morning.

A man from Sheffield suffered a head wound following a confrontation between two groups of men in Cross Church Street around 4am on Saturday. Eyewitnesses said at least three shots were fired and two cars sped away from the scene following the incident.

It is believed to have stemmed from an earlier incident inside the Ethos and Visage complex at Folly Hall around 2am and involved a group of men on a night out in Huddersfield from Sheffield. They went to Cross Church Street to buy some food and trouble erupted.

The injured man was allowed home after treatment at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary. Detectives are treating the shooting as attempted murder.

CCTV footage from the scene of the shooting is being examined by officers.
