A shop manager was stabbed in the leg during a terrifying armed robbery in Dewsbury last night.

Now detectives have appealed for help in catching the thugs.

The terrifying incident happened seconds after two men - one armed with a knife - ran into the Co-op Store in Brunswick Street and threatened workers.

One headed towards the counter and one of them jumped over it and made demands for cigarettes.

The store manager came onto the shop floor and was confronted by the second man on the shop floor who was armed with a knife.

He was stabbed in the leg and the pair fled.

Det Insp Andy Leonard, of Huddersfield CID, said: “Two white males entered the store armed with a knife. One of the suspects challenged the store manager who had come out onto the shop floor.

“He was confronted by the suspect and suffered a stab wound to his leg.

“The suspects fled on foot.”

He added: “I am certain someone locally will have seen something that can help bring these offenders to justice.

“It was still light, and I would appeal to anyone who was in the area around the time of the incident and saw anything suspicious to come forward.

“We are presently reviewing the CCTV from the scene. Enquiries are ongoing.”

The injured manager was taken to hospital in Wakefield and treated for a one-inch leg wound.

No-one else was injured.

Detectives are looking at whether the robbery is linked to a number of burglaries at Co-op stores including one on Friday at the Co-op in Crosland Moor, Huddersfield. Others have taken place in Holmfirth and Linthwaite.

But this is the only incident which has occurred whilst the stores are open.
