A newsagent was struck on the head during an armed robbery in Cleckheaton this morning.

The attack happened at around 8am at the Smokers Corner newsagents on Bradford Road.

Two men entered the shop and threatened the owner with a weapon before striking him on the head.

The pair then fled the shop and the shop assistant raised the alarm.

The 57-year-old victim was treated at hospital for head injuries.

Det Insp Stephanie Wiseman from Huddersfield CID said: “We were called to an armed robbery at 8am this morning in premises on Bradford Road, Cleckheaton.

“A male shopkeeper was found to have suffered head injuries and was treated in hospital. We would urge anyone who saw witnesses the incident to contact police on 101.”

The two suspects are described as both white males and of medium build.
