A care home that was shut down by inspectors has been banned from re-opening.

Care Quality Commission (CQC) officials raised “significant concerns” over care standards at Oxford Grange in Dewsbury.

A team of seven inspectors raised the alarm after a regular inspection at the Oxford Road home.

The 34 residents were moved to other homes after the visit in May and the 37 staff were made redundant.

Now the CQC has confirmed it has removed the registration of the operator, Northfields Care Homes Limited.

The firm run by Mr Surinder Khurana, has eight other homes including two more in Dewsbury – Sunnyside, also in Oxford Road, Dewsbury, and West House at Quarry Road.

As reported in the Examiner, staff told of their shock at the decision to close it down and said they treated patients like their 'own parents'

But the CQC said care at Oxford Grange was “inadequate” and its licence to operate on the site had been revoked.

Inspectors found that people’s health and safety was at risk because of a shortage of suitable staff.

They were also concerned that residents were not protected from abuse or harm.

The home was also not deemed clean enough or adequately maintained while staff training was rated insufficient.

Debbie Westhead, Deputy Chief Inspector of Adult Social Care for CQC, North Region said: “People are entitled to services which provide safe, effective, compassionate and high quality care and Northfields Care Limited has failed the residents of Oxford Grange.

“We found many concerns around people’s care and welfare generally and people living at the home were at risk of receiving inappropriate or unsafe care. It is clear that the provider, Northfields Care Homes Limited, did not have a system to monitor the quality of the service and take the required action. For this reason we had no option but to remove the location from their registration.”

“Since these concerns were first raised, we have been working closely with Kirklees Council and North Kirklees Clinical

Commissioning Group who have overseen the safe relocation of all residents to alternative accommodation.

“The home is no longer operating.”
