MORE foster carers are desperately needed to prevent children being wrenched from their schools and friends in Kirklees when their parents cannot care for them themselves.

Thirty more foster parents are required to stop youngsters being placed with carers outside the district.

Fostering team manager Rob Taylor said: "The demands for local placements are such that we sometimes need to place children out of the Kirklees area - away from family and places that are familiar to them.

"We want to bring these children back to Kirklees while plans are made for their future."

Kirklees Family Placement Unit is crying out for carers willing to foster babies, children and teenagers.

Single people, couples and the retired are all welcome, as are people from a range of religions and races.

Mr Taylor said: "Children are coming from different backgrounds and we very much want to encourage people from all sections of the community to come forward.

"And there is no maximum age limit," said Mr Taylor.

"The key thing is if you feel fit and healthy and are able to care for however long that child needs help.

"There is no such thing as a typical foster carer.

"Becoming a foster carer can transform the lives of children forever."

Carers receive £108.49 per week for a child aged 0-4 years, which rises progressively to £191.37 for those aged 16 and over.
