A GUN was fired as a taxi driver was savagely beaten by masked robbers brandishing an iron bar.

The 46-year-old driver went to pick up a fare at Hawthorne Terrace in Crosland Moor at around 10pm on Saturday night.

When the driver pulled up four African- Caribbean men aged 18 to 20 - two with their faces covered - approached the car.

The driver was dragged out of his dark blue Toyota Avensis car and a shot was fired.

He was then beaten by the men who made off with about £100.

One of the men was believed to have been carrying an iron bar.

The driver was taken to hospital with head injuries, but was not badly hurt.

Det Insp Bob Davies said: "This was a nasty incident.

"The victim has been left shocked and injured and we are keen to talk to anyone who may have witnessed or have information about this attack."

Anyone with information should ring Huddersfield CID on 01484 436659 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
