A NEW group aimed at helping Africans in Kirklees was launched at Huddersfield Town Hall.

Kirklees mayor Clr Barbara Allonby launched African Welcome at a cultural showcase featuring traditional foods, live music, exhibitions and displays about various African cultures.

The organisation, which has been set up by refugees, intends to help Africans feel at home in Kirklees while keeping alive traditions and cultures.

It will also offer them practical support through the difficult process of rebuilding their lives in the UK. Kirklees is home to refugees from a number of African countries, including Somalia, Kenya, Zimbabwe and Cameroon.

Zenebu Hailu, of African Welcome, said: "We are bringing together people who are currently isolated to share their cultures.

"As well as providing them with access to translators and giving them advice and support, our main aim is helping them integrate into society."

African Welcome is supported by organisations including Action Kirklees, Artimedia Huddersfield and Huddersfield Pride. Contact: 01484 226574.
