HUDDERSFIELD's famous showjumping family, the Whitakers, are in action this week.

Three members of the family - John, Michael and Robert - are taking part in the British Open Showjumping Championships, which started in Sheffield yesterday.

The transformation of Sheffield's Hallam FM Arena into the country's biggest equestrian venue involves some impressive statistics.

This includes erecting more than 170 stables to house the horses, belonging to some of the best riders in the UK and from abroad.

More than 230 metres of piping will be connected to take water from a source in the Arena to the stable area. More than 600 tonnes of the best showjumping surface money can buy - a mixture of sand, rubber and wax - will be used to surface the main arena and two warming-up arenas.

And more than 150 officials and contractors will help the event run smoothly, including security, production, vets, catering, course builders and judges.

After the end of the show on Sunday about 20 tonnes of equine waste will be removed!
