Huddersfield has spoken — and it wants an ice rink or live music venue for the town centre's Southgate site.

After the news that Tesco would no longer be building its controversial Tesco Extra store on the site off Leeds Road, we asked Examiner Facebook and Twitter fans what they'd like to see the site used for instead.

Suggestions included alternative supermarkets, a community centre, a new park or a new hospital.

We put your ideas into a poll — and suggestions for an ice rink or live music venue shared first place, with 17 per cent of the vote each.

In second place was the spa suggestion, receiving 12 per cent of the vote, while turning the site into a green space with plenty of trees was favoured by 11 per cent of those polled.

In addition, nine per cent of voters wanted to see a Waitrose built, while six per cent backed a proposal for a new indoor bowling green after Kirklees Council axed the facility from the new sports centre.

Some ideas were rejected by voters, receiving no votes at all.

Student housing or a community centre received no support, while using the land for social housing, professional let flats or a bus depot only received one per cent of the vote.

MP Barry Sheerman says Tesco pulling out of its plans offers Huddersfield the opportunity to make the town centre better.

He suggested the site should be used by another retailer to improve the town for shoppers.
