A CENTENARIAN has celebrated her milestone birthday with family and friends.

Mary Lockwood was guest of honour at her ‘open house’ 100th birthday party at Pilling House, Skelmanthorpe where she now lives.

She received flowers and presents and a telegram from the Queen congratulating her on her achievement.

Mary grew up in Denby Dale where her parents ran Priest’s Fish and Chip shop.

She followed in her father’s footsteps and joined the St John Ambulance.

Her caring nature saw her swiftly gain her home nursing and first aid certificates.

Mary was an active member of the brigade until 1980 and helped at many local events, the pie celebrations, horse trials and galas over the years.

She married Herbert in 1937 and they went on to have two sons Michael and Dennis. Herbert passed away in 1963.

She has led a very active life serving her community.

She is a member of St Aiden’s Church, Skelmanthorpe, and the Mother’s Union, holding various positions.

Mary now has grand children and great grandchildren.
