Ofsted has praised the efforts of staff to improve a Skelmanthorpe school.

Following a recent monitoring visit to Skelmanthorpe First and Nursery school, inspectors said: “The school has made an effective start to getting to good.

“This is because you (the headteacher), your senior leaders and staff have responded very positively to the areas for improvement identified in the recent inspection.

“This is a clear and ambitious plan with set time scales for completing actions. Governors have a defined responsibility for monitoring the progress being made.”

In October, the school was graded as 3-Requires Improvement by the government inspectors, who said that pupils’ progress had slowed and the quality of teaching was inconsistent.

After their latest visit, inspectors added: “You and your senior leaders have gained the commitment of staff and governors to get the school to good. This is because the new leadership team has worked hard and brought an energy to formulating their plan and carrying out a number of improvements since the recent inspection.

The Elm Street school has 180 pupils aged between three and 10.
