HE’S a little star in the making.

And early next week, the entire country can get to see young Ruben Reuter in action.

The 12-year-old from Slaithwaite is one of the young stars of a film documentary made by London-based Mark Three Media which will be broadcast next week on CBBC.

The company specialises in looking at the way disabled people make their mark and the film features Ruben and two other youngsters, Harley and Nicole, who are all Downs Syndrome kids.

Ruben was initially chosen because of his success as a swimmer with the Borough of Kirklees Club.

But he also impressed the production crew and has now been filmed as narrator for the show, which is part of the “My Life” series.

That has come as no surprise to mum Kim and dad Russ, of Bridge Street, Slaithwaite, who run the Shabang theatre group..

“He’s a little bit of a star and that comes across”, said Kim.

“He’s not only a swimmer, but he enjoys football, drama, art and singing. He’s already sung at the Royal Albert Hall with his school choir.

“I work with special needs children and I saw a note on Facebook about the film. I sent them an email about Ruben and they came to Slaithwaite and did a short promo film, which went down very well.

“The production crew then came to Huddersfield and filmed Ruben in Slaithwaite and swimming at the John Smith’s Stadium pool.

“We then travelled down to Newquay, Cornwall, where Harley lives. He is a surfer and they filmed him there.

“We also went to Reading where Nicole is making a name as a young actor, having studied at drama school.

“Ruben took to it all really well and got on so well with the film crew. They made him the voiceover link for all three stories and he does the narrating.”

Ruben also has another big date in his diary.

The Royds Hall High School student who swims for Borough of Kirklees (BOK) will be representing Yorkshire and Humberside along with six other swimmers from BOK’s Special Squad at The Special Olympics National Summer Games this August in Bath.

Just now the family are getting ready for a trip down to London on Monday for a premiere of the film.

A spokesman for the production company said: “Breaking Free tells the story of Ruben, Harley and Nicole who are three very different 12-year-olds, with one very big thing in common.

“They all have a dream and they won’t let anything stand in the way of it – especially something as unimportant as having Down Syndrome.

“The film follows these three extraordinary children over the summer that will change their lives”.

The 30-minute film will be shown on CBBC on Tuesday February 19 at 5.45pm.
